Labelling / Warnings Policy From July 2009 on, I will be adopting the following content
labelling and warnings policy. The purpose of this policy is (2) to provide readers with information about the types of content which they can reasonably expect me to warn for in a story. Spoilers: All my fics will contain a line in the header indicating when in canon a fic is set, if it is set within the source canon. I will generally indicate if a fic contains specific spoilers for a particular episode, even small ones. I always indicate if a fic contains information about a particular episode which is key to the plot of that episode. ("Set mid-season 3, contains spoilers up to 3x10" or "Set post season 4, contains major spoilers for ep 4x05"). Character Death: Anything written prior to June 2009 will not have a character death warning. Anything posted after that will have character death warnings in the header but underneath grey spoiler text, so you can choose to highlight to read it or not, like this: Example. Pairings: I will always state all the significant pairings in the fic in the header, both het and/or slash. Consensual sex: I will use U / PG / R / NC-17 ratings to indicate what I feel the level of sexual content in a fic is, with no distinction between het and slash (ie nothing gets a higher rating just because it's slash). (Although I'm never completely sure where the dividing line between R and NC-17 lies. That said, I write little in the way of explicit sex anyway.) Non-consensual sex, rape, underage sex, incest, BDSM, dubcon, graphic violence and sexual violence: I write these very infrequently or never, but I would warn for all of them if I did happen to write a fic containing any of them. (One exception: I wrote an SGA fic which involved consensual sex between a 16 year old version of Rodney and a 15 year old version of John. I thought about whether to warn or not, and didn't because, in the story, both characters were mentally and emotionally their adult selves, even though they were physically teenagers. If I wrote a fic containing sex between characters who were actual minors, or between an adult and a minor, I would warn for it.) Angst: I will give fics which contain a fair amount of emotional trauma but which end happily a general 'angst' label. If I wrote something with a high angst content which was not resolved before the end of the story, or with a downbeat ending, I would label it as 'dark' in the summary, with an explanatory note as to why. Please note that I will not generally warn for any content not specifically mentioned above. Content which I have written in the past and not warned for has included: characters dealing with mental illness and mental incapacity, terminal illness, and characters having suicidal thoughts. A typical header for one of my fics might look like this: Title: Story Title If you read a story of mine which you believe has been inappropriately or inadequately labelled, please let me know so I can correct it. If you would like more information about the content of a story before you read it, email me and I'll be happy to answer any specific questions. |
